"He made various trips on this boat [Pan Scandia] and signed off in Hull at the end of May, 1939, with the intention of going home for a summer holiday. He stayed at home for the whole summer, working on his father's land and actually intended to return to sea, but the war broke out between England and Germany and he, therefore, decided to stay at home and fish. When the Germans invaded Norway he offered his services as a volunteer and did duty as a coast guard (watcher) on the coast at Godøy. After the end of the Norwegian campaign he continued with the same work, i.e. fishing and land work, up to the time when he left for England."
